Right? One thing this time of COVID-19 “stay at home” orders all over the world has shown us is that we thrive when we can get out and see and do things. We’ve taken “virtual vacations” on our computers and binge-watched television of far off places, but we all know it isn’t the same as actually experiencing it. At this point, many of us are saying we don’t even care where, but we just need a change of scenery, an escape from the walls which have closed in. Some of us love planning and the anticipation of a future vacation gives us joy now. As the world begins to open up from the isolation of the pandemic outbreak, you may want a getaway more than anything, but you question whether it’s okay to do so. The virus isn’t going away anytime soon, but we also can’t stay in our homes forever. Every person will need to assess their risks as well as the risk of exposure to those in their lives who are most vulnerable. Many people will be able to travel, it will be good for the soul to get away, but it must be done wisely. Perhaps this is the year to travel closer to home, take an old-fashioned “road trip” or rent an RV. Go places off the beaten path or where there are vast stretches of open land, fresh air or wilderness, rather than big cities, crowded theme parks, or cruises. Go somewhere in your own state that you’ve always been putting off. Take a hike, rent a boat, or sit gazing at a sunset someplace new. Where you lay your head at night is of particular importance now and for the foreseeable future. While hotel chains are stepping up their cleaning protocols very publicly, the truth is that those procedures should have been in place all along. There wasn’t a guest who Cody didn’t love – and he so enjoyed filling in for their furry family members left at home while they were vacationing. And there was hardly a guest who didn’t love him back with just as much passion. For those initially anxious about such a big fellow, his calm demeanor quickly won them over, and we know he has graced many a Facebook or Instagram post. He took his role here so seriously and adjusted to life as an ambassador for the Sheridan House very quickly. We figure the lymphoma must have been ravaging his body for awhile – yes, cancer sucks as so many of you know – but he never let on until one day he stopped eating. How brave our little guy was, but within just a couple of days of diagnosis, his organs began shutting down and we had to make the hardest decision of our lives. Most all dog lovers go through this at some point, and while the pain fades, it is always with you. While it was the most excruciating day, in so many ways it was also so peaceful and loving. So humane in every way. When he could no longer be the dog he wanted to be, he looked to us to make it better, and he seemed to know because a peace came over him, even on the car ride to the veterinary office. He knew he was loved and he went to sleep for the very last time in our arms. To all our guests who loved him, we thank you for making Cody’s last years so enjoyable. We know he touched your lives, as so many of you wrote about him in your journals in our guest rooms and in your reviews. We also thank so many of you for your loving sentiments after hearing of his passing. It helped us through. To all who have said good-bye to their loving furbabies, we feel your loss and we know they are truly members of the family. Why should I stay in one?** Bed and breakfasts are often perceived as like staying in “grandma’s house” – too intrusive, shared bathrooms, large family-style meals, and doilies and lace décor – but that is not the vibe of the Sheridan House. Many guests choose this as their first bed and breakfast and find they love it, and seasoned “B&Bers” report that this is the best experience they’ve ever had at one. There are no shared baths, meals are served at individual tables, and not a doily is in sight. The owners do live on the premises, making them available should guests need something, but guests are given privacy. Is it too hot in the summer to be enjoyable?** No, this area is a true oasis in the desert state, as we are at 7,000 feet elevation in a pine forest, so our summer temperatures rarely exceed 85 degrees, even on the hottest days, and the evenings cool down considerably. I’m overwhelmed trying to plan what to do in the area. Can you help?** Absolutely. When you book a stay with us, we send you a document we’ve put together of day trips you can take. Included are links to carefully curated tour companies that we recommend if you desire seeing some places on a tour (as even that is quite overwhelming) – these are tours we’ve personally taken and know their quality. And, we will personally work with you on itineraries each day, matching your interests and stamina with the weather and locale; for instance, hiking into the Grand Canyon can be dangerous at any age, depending on the weather. One of the great benefits of staying in a bed and breakfast is having local innkeepers who have a vested interest in making sure that your time away from the inn is just as memorable as your time on the property is. We are happy to help you plan. ## **16. What are your rates?** Each of our rooms has different rates, based on the room configuration and extra amenities like patios, hot tubs and more. Weekends are more expensive than during the week, and summer/fall rates are higher than winter. In addition, like most lodging properties, our rates will vary daily depending on occupancy. ## **17. What is this new surcharge fee at Grand Canyon National Park and other national parks for non-residents of the USA?** Yes, beginning January 1, 2026, the National Park Service made fee changes, adding non-resident fees to some of the parks, as many countries do. - **At the 11 most popular national parks (including *Grand Canyon*) non-U.S. residents will pay a $100 surcharge per person per day, in addition to park entrance fees, *unless* they hold the new non-resident annual pass ($250 USD – valid for 12 months from date of purchase). This pass covers the passholder and their vehicle occupants. This pass is for all national parks, monuments, forests and other lands, not just the 11 parks with the surcharges. For two people going to at least two parks, it will be less expensive to purchase the annual non-resident pass. - **The 11 National Parks with the $100 per person surcharge are: Grand Canyon (Arizona), Zion & Bryce Canyon (Utah), Rocky Mountain (Colorado), Grand Teton (Wyoming), Yellowstone (Wyoming & Montana), Glacier (Montana), Yosemite & Sequoia & Kings Canyon (California), Acadia (Maine) & Everglades (Florida). - **The daily surcharge can be paid at the entrance station (no cash accepted), with the standard entrance fee. Purchase the non-resident annual pass (note, you will not need to provide ID but your name must match the ID you will use at the entrance station).** gov sells **digital annual passes**, which you can use immediately on a mobile device. - Once purchased, the pass is linked to your Recreation.gov account and can be **presented on your phone at park entrance stations**. Make sure to take a screenshot or save it in your phone’s wallet in case of poor cell service at the entrance #### **📮 Order a physical pass to your home address** - Order online from the **USGS Online Store** (store.usgs.gov) to receive the pass by mail (there’s usually a small shipping fee). - The physical pass is shipped before arrival so they have something to present at parks if they prefer a card. This is handy if you won’t have reliable mobile coverage or just prefer a card, but it can be lost #### **📍 Buy in person** - Purchase your non-resident annual pass at most **national parks and federal recreation sites** that issue passes (entrance stations or visitor centers). Do this at the first park you are visiting. #### **YOU NEED TO KNOW – ID REQUIREMENTS** ✅ *Do not* try to use your order receipt or purchase email as the pass — it won’t work. ✅ Make sure to save your digital pass to a phone wallet or take a screen shot so you don’t have to log in ✅ Bring your passport (or a government photo ID) every time you will use the pass. While the busiest tourist seasons are in the summer months, spring and fall are wonderful times to visit, and both the vast emptiness of the Grand Canyon and the peaceful snow-covered grounds of the Sheridan House can be glorious in the slower winter months. In fact, the canyon can be quite magical after a snow. Fall, with the golden aspens, is magnificent. Plenty of winter activities are options for guests to enjoy while in the area over the winter – but many just choose to come partake in the solitude and relaxation the Sheridan House Inn provides. While we offer 1-night stays, we encourage you to fully experience the relaxing peace of the pine forest, intimate moments of romance in your beautiful room, and more of the area’s natural majesty by staying longer. A complimentary bottle of wine will be awaiting you on your getaway of 2 or more nights when you book direct on this website or by phone (and you’ll find our best terms and conditions when you book direct). Please indicate in the “special requests” section whether you prefer red, white or sparkling cider when booking your multi-night stay. Many of our guests often say they wish they didn’t have to leave so soon, so plan your trip accordingly. There are many options north-south-east-west for day trips, visiting the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and beyond; we’d be happy to help you plan your itinerary. Most of the year we do have 2-night minimums to our rooms with porches, including now our 2 rooms with private outdoor hot tubs. Each of our guest rooms has features that will appeal to different individuals, so look over the descriptions to find the room uniquely suited to you. We continue to make improvements to all of our rooms, and in 2022 were able to upgrade all the tvs to smart tvs so you can stream from your services, as we finally got internet service capable of this. We also still have Dish network for live tv viewing, along with our collections of DVDs. We also completed many upgrades to rooms in 2022, including adding an outdoor private hot tub to the Sycamore Room (as so many of our guests complained that our Rosewood Room was “always full”). We have a Tesla charger available to our overnight guests at no charge, so make sure to check that you’ll need parking for that. We contracted with Life Quest Training and Consultants for a full property evaluation for ADA compliance, and have created a detailed plan to implement phased renovations when readily achievable to remove barriers to ADA compliance of the property. When renovations are completed, the Sycamore Room will be ADA compliant, with a full bathroom renovation. We currently do not have wheelchair access; however, the Rosewood Room has the fewest stairs and is close to the dining room, and the Sycamore and Fernwood Rooms are on the ground level of the adjacent Guest House, and offer more accessibility for those with mobility limitations. This philosophy is what helps to make our adults-only bed and breakfast one of the best places to stay near Sedona, Arizona and the Grand Canyon. We offer our guests choices for breakfast – choices of where to eat, what to eat, and even flexibility on when to eat. Some people have serious and very necessary dietary restrictions; the last thing we’d want for our guests is for them not to be feeling their best when visiting a place as breathtaking as the Grand Canyon. Others strive to eat healthy, knowing that food is fuel for their bodies, while other guests decide that they want to indulge when they are on vacation. We sincerely wish to satisfy the needs and desires of our guests when it comes to our breakfast. Please know that we will be continually changing, improving and modifying our breakfast service to better accommodate each of you. We serve breakfast from 8:00-9:00 AM (and sometimes a little earlier by request) in the dining room or on the deck in the warmer months. After your puff, you can enjoy one of 4 fresh-roasted (locally sourced) coffees or tea along with fresh-squeezed orange juice or smoothies. Next, you can choose one of our seasonal starters, which includes seasonal oatmeal, fruit cups, baked grapefruit, fried apples, seasonal parfaits with granola, whipped ricotta with fresh berries, or everyone’s favorite “breakfast ice cream,” which you’ll have to taste to believe, a real summer treat. You’ll choose from 4 entrees – a sweet dish, savory item, an American Southwest specialty, and a healthier or lighter fare breakfast. Our Stay In the Inn Dinners are wonderful out on the porch in the setting sun. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife. You may see javelinas, deer, skunk, our unique Kaibab squirrels, fox, lizards, rabbits, and many species of birds. While bobcats, coyotes and mountain lions do inhabit the forest, they are rarely seen, and bears don’t make homes in this area due to a lack of food. We are lucky to have very few flying insects in these parts, and those that you may see are usually only around for a quick season. Our living room is a cozy place for conversation. We’ve displayed area travel and history books that are available for guests to read while here, and we have an extensive DVD collection in the cabinets for guests to enjoy in the privacy of their rooms. You don’t have to be a kid to dress up in your matching Christmas pjs and experience the magic. - *Winter Wonderland at Bearizona* – Bearizona lit up for the holidays, operating most of December on Friday, Saturday and Sunday - *Christmas Parade of Lights and Tree Lighting* – There is something very special about a small town parade, and it takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. ## Spring & Summer Events - *Steam Saturdays* – the first Saturday of the month from April through October, along with some other special days TBD, the train to the Grand Canyon is pulled by a steam engine. It leaves the station at 9:30am and returns around 5:45pm and is one of the most nostalgic sights to see and hear. - *2nd Saturday Art Walk* – Later afternoon and early evenings on the 2nd Saturday of the month from May through October our normally busy downtown becomes even more active with many stores and restaurants having special refreshments and spotlighting local artisans. - *Rodeos* – There is nothing that says “Wild West” more than a rodeo, a time-honored tradition in the west. Rodeo events in Williams may not be the pro-rodeo circuit, but instead involve real ranchers and cowboys who are about as rugged as they get. Check at the visitor’s center when you get in town if anything will be going on. The biggest annual rodeo event is the “Cowpunchers Reunion” which is usually the 3rd weekend in June and also includes barn dances and other events in town. - *Stargazing events* – You’ll sure notice that our skies are dark and the stars are brighter than you’ve ever seen. Please know that there is no “business as usual” as we all must work together for the well-being of our guests, our staff and ourselves, as we live on the property. ## Child-Free Adult Environment Our guests look forward to the adult setting of our inn, one of the only facilities outside of Sedona to do so; all guests must be age 16 or above, without exception. ## Occupancy Each [guest room](/view-all-rooms) has a 2-person maximum occupancy, even the room with 2 full-size (double) beds. Should guests arrive with additional persons exceeding our maximum occupancy, an additional room will need to be purchased, subject to availability. ## Availability and Rates Sheridan House Inn is open all year and reservations can be made on our website or by phone. Taxes at the prevailing rate, which we pay to the State of Arizona, are added to the published room rates, which vary by season. We often offer [specials](/specials) or discounts only available when booking directly with us. ## Deposit and Payment If making a reservation directly with Sheridan House Inn, a deposit of one (1) night’s stay, plus tax, will be charged at the time of booking, and the remaining balance will be charged on the provided credit card in the week prior to arrival. For single night reservations, or those made within seven (7) days of arrival, the full reservation fee will be charged at the time of booking. Deposits and payments for reservations made through third-party websites such as Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, etc. will be charged on the provided card per the payment policies of those companies which were agreed to during the booking process. See Group Reservations below for those booking three (3) or more rooms. ## Cancellations Circumstances with illnesses, jobs, weather, or family situations sometimes force changes to travel plans. If you booked direct through our website or via phone and cancel more than seven (7) days in advance of arrival, we will refund your deposit, minus a $25 cancellation fee per reservation. This fee also applies to changes to your arrival/departure date that result in a shorter stay. For reservations canceled within seven (7) days of arrival, or for no-shows, the full reservation fee is non-refundable unless your rooms(s) are re-booked by another party. We will refund the reservation fee of any rooms(s) we are able to re-book minus a $25 cancellation fee per reservation. No refunds are provided for late arrivals, early departures, or no-shows. Consider rescheduling your needed time away, based on availability and at prevailing rates, and we will waive fees. We can also provide a gift certificate if you are unable to reschedule when cancelling. If you made your reservation through a third-party travel website such as Expedia, Hotels.com, Booking.com, etc., you are bound to the cancellation policies agreed to when booking on their websites. Those cancellation policies are often more stringent than our standard policies. Any reservation made with a third-party travel company must be canceled through that company directly. We highly recommend purchasing trip insurance in the event that you have to cancel and incur non-refundable fees. Here is a link to the many options: . Check with your credit card provider, as some credit cards offer trip protection if you use them to make reservations. ## Check-In Open check-in time is between 4:00-6:00pm. If your travel plans get delayed, [call or email](/directions#contact) with an approximate arrival time so we can be available to you. Please know that we are unable to allow any check-ins after 9:45pm, for the comfort of our other guests. Our property closes at 10:00pm each night and only existing registered guests have access to the buildings. ## Directions **Some GPS programs – especially on iPhones – direct you onto Lewis Street, but it doesn’t go through; we recommend using Google Maps or Waze GPS.** Sheridan House Inn is located at the cul-de-sac at the east end of Sheridan Ave., 3 blocks up the hill (south) from historic Route 66 in Williams – 460 E. Sheridan Avenue, Williams, AZ 86046. Turn south off Route 66 onto Slagel Street at the corner where you see Rod’s Steakhouse. Travel 3 blocks up the hill until Slagel ends at Sheridan Avenue, and turn left. Sheridan House Inn is at the end of Sheridan on the right. ## Parking/Arrival Information There are 3 parking spots in front of the garage doors at the top of the driveway; drive up the driveway and park in front of one of them or at the “loading/unloading only” sign temporarily until you unload your luggage. Plenty of additional parking is available in the cul-de-sac. Come to the front door of our main house, just to the left of the welcome sign, and ring the bell. If you are unable to negotiate the stairs, because of mobility limitations, we will reserve one of these spots for you for your stay upon request. Feel free to [call or email](/directions#contact) ahead. ## Check-Out Check-out must be completed by 10:30am so that we are able to fully and completely clean the room for the next guest. ## Smoking As a courtesy to all our guests, and in accordance with state regulations (and high wildfire danger in our forest), we have a no smoking (of any substance) policy throughout our entire premises (inside and out). For those guests who wish to smoke, as long as there are no wildfire restrictions enacted, it is allowed in the seating area with a bench near the bottom of the driveway behind the mailbox. We have a covered ashtray on the table by the bench to extinguish butts (please leave covered when not in use). Due to our fire danger, do not leave ashes or butts on the ground. We reserve the right to apply a cleaning charge of $150 for non-observance of this policy. ## Pets & Jesse James, the Inn Dog The innkeepers have pet puppy, Jesse James, a collie; he lives on the property, but cannot go in any guest rooms. Sometimes he is allowed in the common areas, but upon request by a guest he will be kept away from the public areas. As of Fall 2020, we now have a dog-friendly room, the Oakwood Room. There is a Pet Resort at the Grand Canyon Railway which offers boarding facilities for your pet. Under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), service animals individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability are welcomed. ## Breakage/Damage and Flammables Prohibited in Guest Rooms Accidents happen, and things occasionally break or may not work correctly. Guests are asked to report such occurrences, so repairs can be made or items replaced. Damages or related loses over and above normal wear and tear of furnishings, amenities or the property, but due instead to guest misconduct, will be billed to the guest at the full replacement value. If necessary, a $150 cleaning fee will be charged for the time required to clean the damage. No candles, incense or other flammable items are allowed in the guest rooms, in accordance with fire regulations. ## Breakfast & Dietary Restrictions We believe that a special [breakfast experience](/breakfast) is one of the reasons people stay at a B&B. Honoring individual tastes, culinary preferences, and dietary restrictions is important, so we offer guests many choices for breakfast, which is served from 8:00-9:00 AM in the dining room, on the deck (in the warmer months), or in your room. We offer a “To-Go-Breakfast” if you will be leaving earlier. Our menus change daily and seasonally. Let us know of your needs in advance, and we will attempt to accommodate whenever possible; please understand that we operate a small kitchen and are unable to guarantee no cross-contamination. ## Kitchen We operate a licensed commercial kitchen facility, and in observance of food service regulations, only staff is allowed in the kitchen, so there are no food preparation areas available to guests. However, there are Keurig coffee makers with complimentary coffees and teas in each guest room, and a fresh water dispenser for hot and cold water is located in the hospitality area of our main building. The innkeepers will provide ice upon request. Welcoming Environment: We welcome all adult guests (over the age of 16), extending the same hospitality and respect to everyone; we expect that our guests provide that same courtesy to other guests while here at Sheridan House Inn. ## Quiet Hours: For the comfort of all the guests, quiet hours are observed between the hours of 10:00pm to 7:30am in both the Main House and the Guest House. Please be respectful of this time. **Group Reservations/Cancellations:** 3 or more rooms booked together is considered a Group Reservation; call to make special arrangements and check availability. All payments must be made on one provided credit card. A 1-night deposit will be collected per room at the time of booking, and the final payment for all rooms will be charged on the provided card thirty-one (31) days prior to arrival. It became obvious that couples desire more in their own relationships, so we have formalized the process we did into our “State of our Marriage” Getaway Program. It includes individual and couple exercises to complete, along with time for reflection whether at the Grand Canyon or other tourist spots, or in the privacy of your room. We are fully compliant with ADA regulations regarding Service Animals (SA) and even though we do not accommodate pets or emotional support dogs, we welcome Service Animals individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability. Please notify the inn in advance that you will bring a Service Animal who will be by your side throughout your stay. We have extensive plans to be fully ADA compliant regarding our physical property, and in the meantime, ask guests with disabilities to contact us by phone to discuss options. We are continually making improvements and phased renovations for more accessibility. We purchased the inn in 2018. We contracted with Life Quest Training and Consultants in 2019 for a full property evaluation for ADA compliance, and have created a detailed plan to implement phased renovations when readily achievable to remove barriers to ADA compliance of the property. According to the ADA, businesses that serve the public are to remove architectural barriers when it is “readily achievable” to do so; in other words, when barrier removal is “easily accomplishable and able to be carried out without much difficulty or expense.” The decision of what is readily achievable is made consider the side, type and overall finances of the public accommodation and the nature and cost of the access improvements needed. Barrier removal that is difficult not may be readily achievable in the future as finances change. The ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan Report is available upon request. We are updating our website as improvements are made. When renovations are completed, the Sycamore Room will be ADA compliant, as there will be an additional ADA compliant entrance with ramp along with a full bathroom renovation. Meanwhile, we are continually making improvements. For instance, we have added grab bars and purchased devices such as shower chairs to accommodate those with limited mobility. There are 3 rooms on the ground floors of one of our two buildings – Rosewood, Fernwood and Sycamore – which offer more accessibility.
